HEY! I’M MONIKA…

Have you ever looked at a life you’ve worked hard to build and thought, “This is good… so why do I still feel like something’s missing?”

I’ve been living in Toronto for the past 25+ years. I share life with my spouse, Rob, and these days we’re empty nesters - my son is 23, living independently and building his own life. I’ve always loved learning and growth: I’m a big reader, I like art, I enjoy travelling and experiencing different cultures, and I volunteer and mentor young talent in the financial services world.

From the outside, everything looked  ”right”… but inside, I couldn’t ignore the desire for more freedom - not just to travel, but to truly live with more choice and flexibility.

THE JOURNEY THAT LED ME HERE: I’m originally from Bratislava, Slovakia (back when it was Czechoslovakia). Growing up without the same freedoms many people from Western world take for granted shaped me deeply - it gave me grit, resilience, and a strong appreciation for opportunity.

Through an international student organization AIESEC, my world opened up: internships, exchange programs, and friendships across cultures. That love for international community stayed with me. After living back and forth between Europe and US in my early career, I was eventually transferred to Canada through Citibank where I worked for 15 year. Canada became my home too.

Over the years, I built a rewarding career across banking and later consulting. I genuinely enjoyed the work - leading teams, building solutions, and creating outcomes with brilliant people. But corporate life also came with invisible limits: long hours, stress, burnout, limited vacation days, inability to work remotely outside of Canada. 

And with cold Canadian winters, having my family including elderly parents in Slovakia, and friends all over the world I felt that tension even more – The world, Europe is so close and connected, yet my time was always restricted to short visits.

THE CAREER THAT EVOLVED - NOT ENDED:  Today, I still have my corporate role - and I genuinely enjoy it. I’m proud of the work I do, the teams I collaborate with, and the impact we create. I am not walking away from my career impulsively, nor am I looking to replace it overnight.

What changed is my perspective. After three decades in banking and consulting, I became deeply aware of how quickly industries shift - restructuring, digital transformation, AI agents, market changes. I realised that even strong, well-compensated professionals benefit from building something of their own.

So instead of waiting for retirement age or reacting to external change, I chose to be proactive. I’m building my business alongside my corporate career, investing a few focused hours each day. There is no conflict with my professional responsibilities, and, in many ways, the personal growth and leadership skills I’m developing positively influence how I show up everywhere.

This approach feels aligned, responsible, and empowering. It reduces stress about “what if” scenarios and replaces it with clarity and ownership.

THE BUSINESS I’M BUILDING - ON MY TERMS: I’m at the beginning of this entrepreneurial chapter - and I’m proud of that. I started recently, and I’m building intentionally.

My strategy is simple and practical:
Proactively build your own business while still having your well-compensated corporate job.

By adding a few extra focused hours into each day, it’s possible to create a second income stream that can eventually replace - and potentially exceed - your current income, on top of savings and pension plans. That is how I envision retiring early: not by abandoning stability, but by strengthening it.
